Shakertown

Yesterday we went to Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill, a restored Shaker community about 15 miles from where I grew up. I love it there. The architecture and furniture is all so simple and just magnificent. I actually worked there for a summer, 10 years ago, and it was a lot of fun. I took a couple of pictures inside the restaurant and wanted to post them.
Here's a staircase. I love the spiral stairs, and I really love the colors of paint that are used throughout the village--muted but not boring.

Here's the same staircase, looking from the bottom up. Isn't it sort of like being inside a seashell?

The Shakers mounted peg rails all around the walls so that they could hang everything--from hats to lights to their chairs at the end of the day. I think peg rails make perfect sense for people who like things tidy (me) or who have nosy toddlers running around (me again!).

Anyway, if you're ever in central Kentucky, I highly recommend you go there for a visit, or even an overnight stay. It's absolutely beautiful.
