It's The Great Pumpkin...Shortage?

If you know me in real life, you know that no matter what the temperature, once the calendar hits September, I'm in full-on pumpkin mode.  I'm generally either holding a Pumpkin Spice Latte in my hand or I'm baking pumpkin bread in my kitchen.  I've toyed with making my own PSL, I regularly whip up pumpkin pancakes for breakfast, and I'm about to make a new pumpkin smoothie I found the recipe for in Runner's World.

Things were cruising along great this year... Starbucks released the PSL a few days early (If you want to see how I celebrate that event, you can watch here) and I was ready for more.  So I set off to the grocery store to buy a few cans of pumpkin, only to discover there were none in the usual spot, the baking aisle.  I checked the canned vegetable and fruit aisle, and found nothing.  "Oh," I thought.  "Of course, they've moved it into the seasonal items.  A little early, but it makes sense."  But no. It was all, decked out with, like, chili and cheese dip for football season, or something equally asinine in light of the fact that, clearly, it was pumpkin season.  Clearly.  I asked the manager, who then delivered the terrible news.  A shortage.  Of canned pumpkin.  Everywhere.  Surely not.  I went home.  I looked online, and to my dismay, what that hateful manager said was true.  See? I figured I'd outsmart the universe and get some on Amazon.  Denied.  Totally out.  I did find some organic pumpkin, which I nixed, until I saw that regular cans of Libby's were going for as much as $5 on Ebay.  So I bought a case of 12 of the organic for $24.

I put out a call on Facebook.  I got reports from Texas, Ohio, Florida... no pumpkin.  I even got a few cans donated from friends here in Atlanta, with a promise that they'd get a pumpkin treat in return.  My organic pumpkin arrived, but I was ambivalent, having read it has a runnier consistency that makes baking difficult. I found some pumpkin pie mix in the freezer and turned it into a loaf of bread that just felt like a tease, really.

I was bummed.  And here's why.  My first child was born 5 years ago next week, and becoming a mother really rocked my world.  In those first few weeks, when sleep was a memory and chaos was becoming our new reality, our friends and family really came through with us.  They came and cooed over the baby, but more importantly, they brought food.   David and I ate and ate and ate, and still had enough in the freezer that we didn't get through it all until after Christmas.  I was basically consuming love and care in a time when I was trying to figure out how to care and love this little babe who was so new to us, and so unknown.  I remember that love--in the form of my mom's sloppy joe casserole, Casey's chicken tetrazzini, Toni's ham and potatoes au gratin, Paula's pecan pie, and Dianne's chicken noodle soup so fondly.

But most of all, I remember Dawn's pumpkin bread.  She makes it constantly, year-round, to eat and to give away, but I'd never had it before.  I remember one night, the dead of night, perhaps 3 a.m. or so, when I'd just nursed Ada and gotten her to sleep for the 3rd or 4th time that night.  I was hungry and I was a little scared, and I wandered into the kitchen.  And I remember leaning over the counter and slicing a thick piece of that pumpkin bread and just... relishing it.  It was so lush and full of flavor, and it somehow made that little moment perfect.  I went back to sleep satisfied, for that instant, that everything would be okay.

Ever since then, me and pumpkin, we tight.

So you'll be glad to know that, about 10 days ago, I started hearing from friends, "I found pumpkin here."  And "they had a few cans there."  And then one magnificent day, I found 12 cans at Publix.  I bought eight--four for me, four for Dawn.  I left four for some other lucky soul.  You'll also be glad to know that this past weekend I read that yes, the pumpkin shortage is over.

Still, every time I'm back at Publix, I check the shelf, and, finding a few cans of pumpkin, I slide one or two into my cart, just because I want to be sure I can re-live that perfect moment again.  Just in case.

My current stash of pumpkin... minus the 12 cans of organic that I got off Amazon.com.

Lindsay's Modified Version of Dawn's Pumpkin Bread
I cut the sugar down from 3C to 2C.  I tried cutting it more, but it's not as good.  If you want to be truly decadent, use three cups. And I add a little lemon extract to all pumpkin baked goods; it makes it taste light and fresh.

Whisk together:

2 C sugar
3 1/2 C all-purpose flour
2 t. baking soda
1 1/2 t. salt
1 t. cinnamon
1 t. nutmeg (I grate mine fresh)
1/4 t. ground ginger
1/4 t. ground cloves

Mix the above dry ingredients and make a well, then add:

1 C vegetable or canola oil
4 eggs
2/3 C water
1 15 oz. can pumpkin
1 t lemon extract

Mix well and pour into two greased and floured loaf pans.
Bake at 350 for 70 -75 minutes.

NashAwesome!

This weekend took us to Nashville to celebrate the marriage of David's cousin Jim to a fine girl named Christie. It was one of those very joyful weddings, where it almost hurt to look at the bride and groom because they were so aglow with love and excitement. Although I must say I didn't catch the look on their faces when that wayward toddler ran down the aisle and all the way to the front of the church right in the middle of the ceremony, cackling all the way. That would be because that toddler's name is Roxy. And I was the simultaneously mortified and tickled mom trucking down the aisle after her.

I also got to hang with Dave's fam and some new and old friends, so I am refreshed. Today we went to the Adventure Science Museum and I loved seeing the girls explore with such glee. Highlights? Lifting a car with a lever and climbing up a spine.

Love you, Nashville!

Hey Ada, camera's over there!

Easter-Ready (Well, not really)

I bought Ada's Easter dress last week. It is so very pretty. My mom funds the Easter dress every year, because, well, fancy dresses are her thing. Ada declared it a Princess Dress and really wants to play in it every day. We'll see if it makes it until April. But she sure was agreeable to a couple pictures in it!

Roxy, not so happy that she doesn't have a new princess dress.
Now, on to finding MY princess dress for Easter... Mom?

We Belong in the Zoo

Last week, it went from snowing and 32 on Sunday to 77 last Friday. What does this mean? Why, it means that everybody in Atlanta went to the zoo. Including us. So off we went in search of lions and tigers and (panda) bears. Oh MY.

Ada saw her beloved pandas, and got the stamp to prove it.

Lab rat

Every few months researchers at Emory University call Chez Mast and request that one of our girls be part of one psychology research project or another. Today Ada participated in one on sharing. Here she is with research assistant Erin and two handpuppets. I am not sure how much she shared with who, but I feel confident she looked out for number one. That's my girl!

History

I made it a point to watch the Inauguration today with the girls. I didn't say much; I know they don't have a clue what's going on. Just told them it's important. I was not an Obama supporter, and while I respect the office no matter who holds it, I have many misgivings that I fervently pray will be disproved over the next four years. But to tell the truth, I was pretty emotional today. Why?

--I am so thankful for a peaceful transition. We have no real concept of what a massive blessing this is. I didn't have to worry about my husband being killed on the way to work, or our house being bombed due to social unrest. Instead, our leaders got together for coffee. Unheard of.

--My children will never know an America where there has been no black president.

--I get really proud when I see all those American flags waving. I'm glad to live here. I thank God he put me here. I know he is still in control, regardless of who is in office.

Here's what Inauguration Day looked like in my house today:

They started out bouncy. That vibe continued, as Ada and Roxy launched into a spontaneous dance party when Aretha started singing. Never danced to 'My Country Tis of Thee' before, but hey, we rolled with it.Roxy watches Obama enter.
Obama sworn in. Hey, kids! Pay attention! This is important!

Our time in Kentucky was a lot of fun... my sister had delicious soup made for us when we arrived, my cousins came up for Mom's birthday and thrifted with us (cowgirl dress up outfit, anyone?), and my girls got to see snow for the first time. We were also able to go to storytime at my hometown library. Things have changed a little there since I was a kid... gone is the mean kid's librarian who berated my 5 year old self for overdue books...out with her, in with Miss Libby. She is seriously great, and leads the kids in rousing renditions of "Five Little Monkeys" and Old MacDonald, complete with finger puppets.Steve Wolfgang (AKA Lindsay's Dad) came. He never can resist the opportunity to commune with books. If grandchildren are involved, triple bonus for him.
My friend Sara, who I've known since elementary school, brought her little girl Julia. She and Roxy entertained each other by pulling magazines off the shelves. Yay! Destruction!
We got to do a craft--makin' penguins, quite appropriate for the pending cold front coming through...
Roxy was way more interested in eating the glue stick.
Books! Crafts! Miss Libby! Hurrah!

Tuesday, 4:57 p.m. Chrisman Lane. Boyle County, Kentucky.

After a long day of travel, the females of the Mast family arrive in beautiful Boyle County, Kentuck. Happy, but tired. Roxy, chilling but still ever-aware of the camera. Ada, finally sleeping (which is why I was driving on the country roads... so she could sleep awhile). Me, flat tired. But excited to be here to celebrate my mother's mumphtieth birthday.

Hey there, li'l fella!

Take a look at this:

To you and me, it is a little rollerball thing set in plastic so it can be easily held. David used it to massage my poor, aching back while I was great with child(ren). But to Ada, it is her Li’l Fella. As in, she picks it up and says to it, in a high-pitched, tender voice, “Hey Li’l Fella! How are you Li’l Fella! Mom, look at my Li’l Fella! Can you give my Li’l Fella a kiss?”

What she's thinking, who knows? But it makes me giggle. A lot.

A pregnancy massage must-have. And a children’s toy. And the subject of a blog post. Now that’s what I call Value Added.

The one thing Ada wants...

is a baby brother.  ‘Til that happens, her friend Allie has one she lets Ada love on.

Roxy is happy just loving on Allie.  She’s a little less demanding on that front.  Thanks, R!

Monday, 7:14 p.m.

Lindsay:  Putting off bedtime until David gets home so he can see his girls.

Roxy: Putzing around the house, observing Ada.

Ada: Removing the dollhouse stairs from the dollhouse, making the dollhouse people fall down the tiny stairs, and acting out their terrified screams.

This calls for a family (minus David) portrait:

Happy New Year!

I’m pretty excited about 2009.

So far, I’ve had lots of time with D. Mast and my girls, as well as some dear friends.

David and I were so happy to be reunited, and I so tired from traveling back from my in-laws that we took down the tree and crashed New Year’s Eve night.  We did drink some sparkling grape juice to celebrate.  I don’t need much more special than that!

Then, yesterday it was time for the traditional Hoppin’ John and collard greens.  I sautee my collards with a little olive oil, sea salt and garlic.  The Hoppin John includes bacon, onion, green and red pepper, celery, cajun spice and brown rice.  It was the best batch yet.  We shared it with our friends Todd, Amanda, and Manning. The kids liked the Hoppin' John, but their real treat was Amanda's cupcakes

More to come on resolutions… not sure what I’m going to resolve, as I am always making plans and changes here and there.  I’m on a constant life-tweaking plan.  If anything major comes up, I’ll let you know.

Christmas Wrapup

Christmas has come and gone, and, besides the stomach virus that made it’s way through the family, was really a lovely holiday.  Grammy (My dad’s mother) got the girls a teaset with violets on it.  Gram loves violets.  And lemme tell ya how CUTE these girls are, playing tea party.  Roxy likes to stir her spoon in her cup, and Ada enjoys pouring.

Roxy got a new baby to throw up on her li’l shoulder.

Then she got so overloaded that she just stopped.  “Roxy, do you want to open this one?” *vigorous head shaking, no*

Our friend Caroline came for brunch (pumpkin pancakes, thick-sliced maple bacon, fresh fruit and cheese grits casserole).  Then she read Ada from the book she brought for the girls.

I got a gorgeous new apron from my sister Lesley.

Everybody slept…

Then we had dinner… Horseradish crusted standing rib roast, white cheddar mashed sweet potatoes, creamy bacon brussels sprouts, green bean casserole, cranberry Parker House rolls and pumpkin cheesecake.  Delish… especially the roast beast.
